Flying Officer Lewis was an Australian Cadet trained for the RAF who embarked for the UK on 17 July 1937.
During a reconnaissance mission along the Germany coast, Wellington N2889 broke up in the air and crashed into the sea off Wilhelmshaven following a sustained fighter aircraft attack. The crew members were:
