On 27 April 1917, Cadet Allen was killed when Henry Farman aircraft 1214 crashed at Norwich.  The aircraft was on its landing glide, did not flare and struck the ground heavily, throwing Cadet Allen clear.  He landed on his head and was fatally injured.  The Court of Enquiry found no fault with the aircraft and determined pilot error as the cause of the crash.
