On 4 January 1942, Spitfire AB195 flown by Pilot Officer Baker was detailed to carry out cannon firing tests over the sea on a non-operational flight. The aircraft crashed at 1600 hours south west of Beachy Head, East Sussex, and Pilot Officer Baker was killed. The aircraft was seen to dive into the sea in an inverted position.
