Brother of Flight Sergeant Ronald Joseph Birtles (421154)

At 2100 hours on the night of 27 August 1943 Halifax JD414 took off from Breighton detailed to bomb Nuremburg, Germany. Nothing was heard from the aircraft after take-off and it failed to return to base. JD414 exploded over the target area following a fire in the main fuel tanks. Seven of the crew were members killed and one taken prisoner.
