On 20 January 1942, Wirraway A20-319 flown by Sergeant Blackman took off from Rabaul to intercept the Japanese in their initial attack on Rabaul with about 110 aircraft. A20-319 was shot down into the sea near Rabaul at about 1400 hours. It was one of three Wirraways – A20-319, A20-179 and A20-303 – shot down by the Japanese on the day. The whole action had lasted less than 10 minutes. In that time, in the 8 crews that had taken off, 6 of their number had been killed and 5 wounded or injured. Three of the squadron’s total of 8 Wirraways had been lost in combat, one completely wrecked in a crash just after take-off, and 2 seriously damaged in crash landings.
