On 5 February 1944, Flight Lieutenant Blight in Hurricane HW853 went missing on a day interception of enemy aircraft. The Squadron was ordered to proceed to a point west of Chiringa at low altitude. Flight Lieutenant Blight did not proceed with the Squadron but was believed to have turned to intercept an incoming raid. He is believed to have been shot down near Buthidaune some distance south of his assigned patrol position.
