Lieutenant Bowd was killed when Martinside A1607 broke-up and fell to the ground from an altitude of about 3,000 feet.  The accident was due to a manoeuvre that resulted in a nose dive with engine on from which Lieutenant Bowd attempted to recover.  The recovery placed strain on the tail section of the aircraft which broke away in the region of the pilot’s seat and he was dragged by his seat belt with the tail section to his death.
