On 29 November 1941, Spitfire P7445 flown by Sergeant Brewin was engaged in a practice formation flight and when passing through cloud at about 1330 hours, the aircraft became detached from its Section Commander somewhere between the Isle of Man and mainland England. P7445 failed to return to base and it was believed that it had crashed in the sea. Searches failed to find any trace of the missing aircraft or Sergeant Brewin.
