On 13 July 1945, Leading Aircraftman Burgess was admitted to Richmond Hospital, Queensland, where an operation was performed for appendectomy. He became seriously ill after the operation, and died at No. 3 Medical Receiving Station, Townsville, on 26 November 1945.
