On 20 October 1916, Lieutenant Burns was transferred to the Royal Flying Corps in the field.

On 20 April 1917, Lieutenant Burns was killed when DH1a aircraft A1625 crashed in a spinning nose-dive.  He was practicing stalls at the time.
