At 1707 hours on the night of 8 February 1945 Lancaster ND696 took off from Coningsby detailed to bomb the synthetic oil production plant at Politz. Nothing was heard from the aircraft after take- off and it failed to return to base. The aircraft was shot down and crashed at Papendorf, approximately 26 miles north west of Stettin, Germany. Five of the crew members were killed and two became Prisoners of War.
