On 27 March 1945, Flying Officer Cameron in Spitfire A58-434 and Flying Officer Willoughby John Basey (407613) (Discharged: 14 February 1946) were detailed to carry out a sweep between Cape Salimoeli and Kaoe, Halmaheras Islands. The aircraft took off at 0900 hours with Flying Officer Cameron flying No 2. At about 0950 hours in the vicinity of the Lobela village, Flying Officer Basey lost sight of his No. 2 and he called him radio without response. He searched the area but could find no trace of A58-434 or Flying Officer Cameron. He returned to base at 1030 hours. Other searches were carried out but were unsuccessful. Later in 1945 the wreck of A58-434 and the remains of Flying Officer Cameron were found in the village of Wassia.
