On 28 May 1944, Spitfire PA885 took off from Benson detailed to carry out a photo reconnaissance of Dortmund and Bochum and airfields in the area. Nothing was heard from the aircraft after take-off and it failed to return to base. The aircraft crashed at Meerle, Netherlands, at 2015 hours presumably as the result of enemy action and Flying Officer Clark was killed.
