On 24 February 1917, Lieutenant Clifton resigned from the Australian Army and accepted a Commission in the British Army.

On 22 July 1917, Lieutenant Clifton was killed in an aircraft accident in France. No further details of the accident are given in the extracts from the Casualty Book and Casualty Card.
