At 1545 hours on 8 January 1943 Spitfire AR274 flown by Sergeant Cubbitt collided in the air with Spitfire AB144 flown by Flying Officer George Evelyn Brooke-Turner (126946) (RAFVR) at Dreghorn, near Auchengate, Ayrshire, Scotland, and both pilots were killed.
