Fight Lieutenant Cullen flying in Hurricane V7288 was shot down in aerial combat with an Italian Fiat G50 fighter aircraft off the Albanian Coast on 4 March 1941. He was in a force of RAF fighter and bomber aircraft attacking an Italian naval force shelling the Albanian Coast.
