On 14 March 1916, Second Lieutenant Cuningham (Pilot) and Air Mechanic First Class John William Newton (3098) RFC (Gunner) flying BE2c aircraft 4153 were killed in aerial combat when their aircraft was attacked by Fokker aircraft near Achiet-le-Grand.  They had been tasked to escort a photographic reconnaissance aircraft.
