Flight Lieutenant Deland survived a mid-air collision at Mount Gambier, South Australia, on 12 July 1941 in which Leading Aircraftman Lance Lorimer Andrew (408203) was killed.

On 24 March 1946, Flight Lieutenant Deland was killed in a motor vehicle accident in Singapore. Flying Officer Joseph Massey (185868) (RAFVR) was also fatally injured in the accident and died on 25 March 1946.
