On 15 July 1942, Kittyhawk ET977 was in a formation of four aircraft carrying out a bombing and reconnaissance flight over Bir Makekhad, Libya. Intense anti-aircraft fire was encountered when the aircraft went down to bomb enemy concentrations and ET977 failed to return from the mission.
