Early a.m. 38496 CPL. DUNNE F.D. Cook met with an accident and was taken to Port Hedland Hospital. F/Lt. G. PHILLIPS Medical Officer was signalled for at Learmonth as Dr. Pope (Flying Doctor) advised than an operation was necessary. Blood donors were called for from the Unit. H.Q.W.A. P.M.O. (Headquarters Western Area Principal Medical Officer) advised by signal that CPL. DUNNE was seriously ill and that an operation was necessary, also requested Area advise next of kin. F/Lt. PHILLIPS arrived by Anson aircraft 1300 hours. Operation was performed by Dr. Pope and F/Lt. PHILLIPS resulting in a further signal being sent to H.Q.W.A. advising that Cpl. DUNNE was dangerously ill and that his wife’s presence was advisable.

The funeral of the late CPL. DUNNE took place at the War Cemetery Pt. Hedland, F/Lt. A.W. DOUGLAS (263880) was officer in charge of the funeral arrangements and F/Lt. SWEETMAN of H.Q.W.A. performed the burial service.
