At 2013 hours on the night of 26 August 1944 Lancaster NF952 took off from Mildenhall to attack Kiel, Germany. Nothing further was heard from the aircraft after take-off and it did not return to base. With no trace of the missing aircraft or crew being found following post war investigations and enquiries, it was recorded in 1948 that the missing crew were lost at sea.
