On 20 December 1943 No. 260 Squadron was briefed to carry out an armed reconnaissance of roads north of Guaedelorele and attack enemy concentrations of transports. The formation was airborne at 1120 hours at Meleni. At approximately 1200 hours while flying over the target area Edmends reported over the wireless he was returning to base as he was having engine trouble. Shortly after leaving the formation his Squadron Leader tried to contact him without result.
