At 2126 hours on the night of 9 April 1944 Lancaster ME688 took off from Spilsby detailed to carry out a gardening mission and lay mines in Baltic waters. Nothing was heard from the aircraft after take-off and it failed to return to base. It was presumed that the aircraft was lost over the North Sea. All the crew members lost their lives.
