At 1400 hours on 7 February 1945 Mustang FX989 took off from Andrews Field flying as “Gander 6” in FX989 on a Wing Fighter Group (Rodeo 413), led by Squadron Leader Hearge to sweep the Munster/Leipzig area. Owing to adverse weather conditions the Sweep was abandoned in the Munster area. Flight Sergeant Elliott was heard over the radio to say that he was returning to England and after leaving the main formation FX989 exploded in the air at approximately1500 hours, and the wreckage was scattered over the Ansonghamm area.
