On 18 February 1941, Sergeant Evans was on a solo flight in Beaufort L9829 when on take-off at 2040 hours the aircraft was seen to climb too steeply, turn through 180 degrees then fly into a hill and catch fire one mile north of Chivenor. Sergeant Evans was critically injured and died the next day.
