Lancaster NF936 took off from RAF Ludford Magna at 1709 hours on the night of 4 November 1944, detailed to carry out ABC duties (Air Borne Cigar – jamming transmitter carried by No. 101 Squadron Lancasters to monitor and jam German night fighters using Lichtenstein radar sets) over Bochum, Germany. Nothing was heard from the aircraft after take off and it failed to return to base. The aircraft crashed near Bochum presumably as a result of enemy action, and all the eight crew on board were killed.
