Corporal Fleming was severely burned in an accident at the Pachino Landing Ground, Sicily, on 21 July 1943 and died in No. 45 General Hospital in Malta later on 21 July 1943. He was disinfecting a small building to be used as an operations room for No. 3 Squadron when a fire started.

Leading Aircraftman Peter Edward Enright (29797) was also fatally injured in the same accident.
