At 1651 hours on 14 February 1945 Lancaster LL966 took off from East Kirkby to attack Rositz,
Germany. Nothing was heard from the aircraft after take-off and it did not return to base. In 1948 it was established that LL966 was one of two aircraft shot down by anti-aircraft fire 2kms east of Rositz, at Zschernitzsch, which is approximately 24 miles south of Leipzig. The aircraft apparently exploded on impact and wreckage was burnt and scattered over a wide area. The remains of the members recovered from the two aircraft shot down were buried in a communal grave at Zschernitzsch Cemetery. The remains were later exhumed and two crew members were identified and reinterred. The other crew members could not however be identified and are commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.

The crew members of LL96 were:

Sergeant Alexander Carson (1827680) (RAFVR) (Air Gunner)
Sergeant Herbert George Davies (2219321) (RAFVR) (Air Gunner) Reinterred
Flight Sergeant Kevin Gregory Fogarty (434629) (Wireless Operator/Air)
Lieutenant G R Lacey (1105V) (SAAF) (Pilot) Reinterred
Sergeant Duncan Kennedy Watson Mayes (3020850) (RAFVR) (Flight Engineer)
