On 4 February 1919, Cadet Frederick flying solo died at Minchinhamption as the result of the crash of Sopwith Camel aircraft F.1335. The Court of Enquiry found that the cause of the accident was structural failure during the attempted pull-out from a very steep dive. Flying wires on the starboard side broke during the dive and the aircraft was totally wrecked and Cadet Frederick killed on impact.
