On 27 December 1915, Second Lieutenant Godlee resigned from the Australian Army and accepted a Commission in the British Army.
While escorting an offensive patrol on 19 July 1916, Second Lieutenant Godlee, flying DH Scout aircraft 7874, was wounded during aerial combat near Provin and lost consciousness and crashed out of control near Noeux les Mines.
