On the 24 June 1947, Leading aircraftman Hains, a Fitter II Engines, was killed as a result of a collision between a taxying aircraft, Mustang A68-43 and a fire tender. The Mustang was being taxied by Wing Commander Cresswell, the leader of a formation of 8 Mustang aircraft that were in the process of landing at Canberra aerodrome. Leading Aircraftman Hains was a member of the duty crew on the Fire Tender vehicle.
