On a non-operational flight on 13 August 1943, at 1415 hours Beaufort A9-354 flown solo by Flight Lieutenant Hamilton crashed in a paddock 4 miles north-west of the runway at East Sale while endeavouring to carry out what appeared to be an emergency landing and he was killed.
