Lancaster W4919 took-off from Holme-on-Spalding Moor on the night of 23/24 May 1943 detailed to bomb Dortmund, Germany. Nothing was heard from the aircraft after take-off and it failed to return to base. The aircraft was shot down by a night fighter and crashed at 0233 hours at Bergen
(Limburg) a small town on the east bank of the Maas river and about 4 kms inside the Netherlands from the border with Germany. All the crew members were killed.
