On 11 August 1917, Lieutenant Holmes (Observer) and Lieutenant Eric Arthur Hunter Ward RFC (Pilot), flying Bristol Fighter aircraft A7179, were last seen above clouds at 6,000 feet north-east of Douai while leading an offensive patrol.  It was later learned that Lieutenant Holmes had been taken prisoner of war and died from injuries the same day while Lieutenant Ward had been killed in the combat action.
