On 13 October 1943, Vultee Vengeance A27-73 took off from Lowood aerodrome detailed to carry out a non-operational test flight. At 1550 hours the aircraft crashed at South Lowood when fabric was seen to tear off the elevators before the aircraft went into a 60 degree dive from approximately 400 feet, and struck the ground at an angle. Both the crew were members killed.
