On 27 February 1942, Kittyhawk AK665 flown by Sergeant Jennings was on standby when six aircraft were scrambled to intercept enemy aircraft over Tobruk. Enemy aircraft were sighted and while endeavouring to make contact, the formation was attacked by several Me109s from above. During the ensuing battle AK665 received such extensive damage that it crashed four miles south west of El Adam killing Sergeant Jennings.
