On 26 June 1942, Kittyhawk AZ107 flown by Flying Officer Jones crashed near Mersa Matruh and Flying Officer Jones was reported missing. AZ107 was one of eight aircraft acting a top cover for nine Bostons. The Bostons bombed from 9,000 feet, and shortly after the Kittyhawks dropped their bombs. At this stage three MEl09s attacked the top cover and AZ107 was seen to go down in a dive, flatten out, but nothing further was seen and AZ107 failed to return to base.
