Near midnight on 11 December 1943, Corporal Kerrigan was killed when a truck in which he was a passenger rolled over on the Oaks Road at Spotted Gum Hill. Four men including Corporal Kerrigan were pinned under the truck while three others were flung clear. The truck was driven by Corporal Leo Gordon Stack (76075) (Discharged: 26 February 1946) who was court-martialled over the accident. Leading Aircraftman Garnet Isaac Gilholme (15279) (Discharged: 30 May 1946) was also a passenger and assisted in the rescue effort.
