At 1722 hours on 3 August 1943, Aircraftman Class II Lees, an Aircrew Trainee, was killed near the main gate of Bradfield Park. He was standing on the step of a bus which was overcrowded. The bus struck an iron gate and then he was struck by the gate, knocking him to the ground and causing his death.
