At 2205 hours on 1 February 1943, Lancaster R7530 took off from Winthorpe for night circuit practice. The aircraft crashed at around 2225 hours and Sergeant Lloyd was killed with the others being slightly injured. The Pilot had attempted to land but decided to go round again. He carried out the correct procedure of applying full throttle with the undercarriage up, but experienced difficulty in seeing his instruments being dazzled by the floodlight. The aircraft struck the side of a hill and crashed.
