On 13 May 1944, Aircraftman Class I Locke, a Trainee Technician, lost balance through overcrowding on a tram and fell between the tram he was on and a tram coming in the opposite direction. He was admitted to the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital Sydney, dangerously ill, and both his lower legs were amputated post the accident and he died at 1625 hours on 18 May 1944.
