During a non-operational formation flying exercise on 17 March 1944, Spitfire A4695 collided in mid air with Spitfire R6596 and crashed at 0909 hours at Hepburn Moor, Northumberland, killing Flight Sergeant Lynn. R6596 was flown by Pilot Officer James McVeigh Flood (J/35208) (RCAF) which crashed near Brunton but he was unhurt.
