On 20 May 1940, Air Cadet MacPherson, a student pilot, died in an aircraft accident while undertaking a practice forced landing at Guildford (Dunreath) Airfield WA. Air Cadet MacPherson is the first serving RAAF member to have been killed in an aircraft accident in Western Australia. His instructor, John Tudor Evans of the Royal Aero Club of Western Australia, also died in the accident.

The accident occurred in the period when the Royal Aero Club of was undertaking pilot training for the RAAF. Towards the end of 1940, many of the assets of the Club along with some of its flying instructors were used in the formation of No. 9 Elementary Flying Training School at Cunderdin WA on 11 December 1940.
