On 4 September 1942, Aircraftman Class II Mathison, a Driver Motor Transport, was admitted to Bundaberg General Hospital, Queensland, dangerously ill. He was injured in a collision with a truck and a railway engine at a level crossing adjacent to the Bundaberg railway station. Two other RAAF men in the truck were also injured. Aircraftman Mathison died of his injuries on 5 September 1942.
