Lancaster JB540 took off from Wickenby at 2013 hours on the night of 24 February 1944 to bomb Schweinfurt, Germany. Nothing was heard from the aircraft after take-off and it failed to return to base. It was later established that the aircraft had crashed and that all the crew members had been killed in the crash.
