On 2 May 1945, Leading Aircraftman McColl, a Telegraphist, obtained a ride in a US Army truck that went over an embankment in Zillmere Road near Apsley, Brisbane. Leading Aircraftman McColl was thrown from the truck and killed in the accident, while others were injured.
