Pilot Officer McDonough came from Melbourne. He was an Australian Cadet accepted for training by the RAF who embarked for the UK on 9 March 1939.
No. 236 Squadron Blenheim R2774 took off from Thorney Island at 1505 hours on 31 July 1940 to escort bombers attacking Querqueville, France. The aircraft was last seen diving to attack over the airfield and was shot down either by anti-aircraft fire or by Obit Dullberg of III/fG27.
