Sunderland N9022 took off from Oban on a convoy patrol at 1156 hours on 27 December 1940. On return the aircraft crashed in a night landing, at 2117 hours, off Maiden Island, Oban Bay. The Sunderland landed safely but hit an underwater object which ripped open the hull and flipped the aircraft onto its back. The underwater object was thought to be a horse box from the SS Breda, sunk in Ardmucknish Bay four days earlier. All but one of the crew members was killed.
