At 1330 hours on 27 September 1941 Sergeant Merrett took off from Biggin Hill in Spitfire P8560 to carry out an operational patrol along the Dutch Coast. Nothing was heard from the aircraft and it failed to return to base. Sergeant Merrett’s body was washed ashore in the Netherlands on 23 October 1941.
