At 1100 hours on 22 May 1945, Spitfire A58-533 flown by Flying Officer Miller crashed while landing at Pitoe Airstrip, Morotai, after a non-operational formation training flight. A58-533 was Blue 3 and it was the seven aircraft to land during Squadron landing procedure. The aircraft undershot the airstrip hitting a bank of coral and bursting into flames.
